Pyongyang Marathon/ Day of the Sun Tour – 14 Days

Day 0 (Friday, 10th April)
13:00h (1pm) – Obligatory pre-tour meeting of the group in Beijing’s Yi Beiping Beijing Story Restaurant (PDF). Handover and payment of your North Korean visa. Pre-tour briefing. Complementary Chinese-Korean Dinner (1 meal per person is included in the tour fee, extra drinks have to be paid individually). Train passengers take the night train to Pyongyang departing Beijing Railway Station at 17:25h.

 


Day 1 (Saturday, 11th April)
Arrival in Pyongyang, Drive the city, Arch of Triumph (built in 1982 to remember the triumphant return of President Kim Il Sung to Pyongyang from the Korean War), Stroll around Kim Il Sung Square, Dinner at in a local restaurant, Overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 2 (Sunday, 12th April)
Breakfast, Pyongyang Marathon (it’s optional to run the full marathon/half marathon/10km/5km; the marathon running fee – full EUR 150/half EUR 100/10km or 5km EUR 70 – is not included in the tour price and must be paid by each runner on the spot), Drive back to the hotel (time to take a quick shower), Lunch at a local restaurant, Tower of the Juche Idea (built in 1982 on the occasion of the 70th birthday of President Kim Il Sung), Monument to Party Founding (built in 1996 to honour the Workers’ Party of Korea), Dinner at Pyongyang Duck Barbecue Restaurant, Overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 3 (Monday, 13th April)
Breakfast, Reunification Monument (built in 2001 to remember the endeavours of President Kim Il Sung for the Korean Reunification), Drive to the Demilitarised Zone in Panmunjom, Koryo Museum (hosting precious artefacts of the Koryo times), Korean Stamp Shop, Lunch at Tongil Restaurant (you can pre-order Dog Meat Soup for around EUR 5), Kaesong Insam Factory (Ginseng Factory), Drive back to Pyongyang, Dinner at a local restaurant, Overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 4 (Tuesday, 14th April)
Breakfast, Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum (Museum of the Korean War), USS Pueblo (US spy ship captured by the Korean People’s Army in the territorial waters of the DPRK in 1968),Lunch at a local restaurant, 3 Revolutions Exhibition, Pyongyang Film Studios, Dinner and overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 5 (Wednesday, 15th April)
Day of the Sun – Birthdaay of President Kim Il Sung

Breakfast, Fountain Park, Mansudae Grand Monuments (giant bronze statues of President Kim Il Sung and Leader Kim Jong Il)*, Chollima Statue, Grand People’s Study Hall, Celebrations in the city centre, Lunch at a local restaurant, Pyongyang Metro ride, City walk, Dinner at a local Restaurant, Overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 6 (Thursday, 16th April)
Breakfast, Kumsusan Palace of the Sun (Mausoleum of President Kim Il Sung and Leader Kim Jong Il), Revolutionary Martyr’s Cemetery, Lunch at a local restaurant, Drive to Mt. Myohyang (“mountain of mysterious scents”), Dinner and overnight at Chongchon Hotel

 


 Day 7 (Friday, 17th April)
Breakfast, Pohyon Temple (Buddhist temple of the 11th century), International Friendship Exhibition (huge underground exhibition of state gifts given to the DPRK leaders by international statesmen and business people), Lunch at Chongchon Hotel, Drive to Pyongyang, Ryongmun Cavern (huge underground cave), Visit to an ostrich farm, Dinner and overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 8 (Saturday, 18th April)
Breakfast, Mangyongdae Native House (Birthplace of President Kim Il Sung), Drive to Nampo on the Korean West Coast, Visit to a cooperative farm, Lunch picnic near Kangso Mineral Water Factory, Kangso Tombs (ancient tombs of the Koguryo times; UNESCO World Heritage Site – outside visit only, the optional inside visit of the tombs requires a fee to be paid on the spot), Overnight at Ryonggang Hot Spa Hotel (with thermal water pools in each room)

 


 Day 9 (Sunday, 19th April)
Breakfast, West Sea Barrage (giant dam regulating the water level of the Taedong River), Drive back to Pyongyang, Lunch at a local restaurant, City walk, Dinner at a local restaurant, Overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


Day 10 (Monday, 20th April)
Breakfast, Kimilsungia Flower Exhibition, Visit to Moranbong Park, Lunch at a local restaurant, Korean History Museum, Mangyongdae Funfair, Dinner and overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 11 (Tuesday, 21st April)
Breakfast, Drive to Sinchon, Museum of US War Atrocities, Lunch at a local restaurant, Drive to Sariwon, City Walk, Songbul Temple, Folklore Street, Jongbang Castle, Dinner and overnight at Hotel 8th March

 


 Day 12 (Wednesday, 22nd April)
Breakfast, Drive to the Korean East Coast, Lunch at a local restaurant in the harbour city of Wonsan, Wonsan Agricultural University, Kosan Fruit Farm, Dinner and overnight at Tongmyong Hotel

 


 Day 13 (Thursday, 23rd April)
Breakfast, Wonsan Botanical Garden, Ulim Waterfall, Continue to Pyongyang, Lunch at a local restaurant, City Wallk, Ride with the Pyongyang Metro, Dinner at a local restaurant, Overnight at Koryo Hotel

 


 Day 14 (Friday, 24th April)
Breakfast, Departure

Breakfast, Drive to the airport, 10:00h domestic flight to Orang Airport, 11:00h Arrival in Orang Airport, Picnic lunch at Mukye Lake, Soryanghwa Waterfall, Drive along the coast to Chilbosan, Dinner and overnight at Outer Chilbo Hotel (with cold spring water from the tab, hot water in a bucket available during the morning).

 


Day 15 (Saturday, 25th April)
Breakfast, walking in Inner Chilbo (Sungson Pavilion, Pangum Pavilion, Naegyong Pavilion, Kaesim Temple), Check-In and lunch at Homestay, Optional boat trip on a fisherman’s boat (surcharge RMB 40 per person to be paid on the spot), Optional Folklore custom experience in home stay (volleyball game and/or Korean wrestling with the locals, Making Korean food, bonfire at the beach / surcharge of EUR50/group to be paid on the spot), Dinner and overnight at Homestay Village (hot water in a bucket available during the morning)

 


Day 16 (Sunday, 26th April)
Breakfast, Walking in Outer Chilbo (Manmulsang area, Dokgol), 8km hiking to Kangson Gate with wonderful view over Outer and Sea Chilbo (depending on weather), Lunch at Outer Chilbo Hotel, Drive to Kyongsong (optional hot tab bath), Jipsam Revolutionary Site, Continue to Chongjin, Dinner and overnight at Chongjin Guesthouse

 


Day 17 (Monday, 27th April)
Breakfast, Pohang Square, Foreign Language School, Riding a chartered trolleybus, Lunch at Sailors Club, Provincial library, Visit to Chongam Kindergarten followed by a musical performance, Enjoying the overview to Chongjin on Komalsan, Dinner at a local restaurant, Overnight at Chongjin Guesthouse

 


Day 18 (Tuesday, 28th April)
Breakfast, Drive to Orang Airport, Picnic Lunch, 15:00h domestic flight to Orang Airport, 16:00h Arrival at Pyongyang Airport, Dinner at a local restaurant, Overnight at Sosan Hotel

 *Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery and Mansudae Grand Monuments are no ordinary tourist places anymore, making it increasingly difficult for tourists to visit these sites. It is impossible to know beforehand whether the group will be able to see those places. Therefore, please keep in mind that a visit is intended, however cannot be guaranteed. If visits are impossible, other sites will be included instead.
