The itinerary is a pre-planned itinerary, which we intend to follow accordingly. However, it is also normal for DPRK tourism that certain program points may be modified or replaced by the North Koreans at short notice. Usually, such changes only happen to the order of events, but in rare occurances also to larger parts of the itinerary. We as a travel intermediary between our clients and the North Korean government tourism agency are not responsible for any of such short-term changes. We therefore we ask you for your understanding that in the event of such changes, the tour can neither be fully, nor partially refunded.

Tour description

You haven’t really experienced North Korea if you haven’t visited Mt. Paektu, the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeastern China. The 2777m (9003ft) high mountain has a large crater lake on its top, which makes a trip to Mt. Paekdu really unforgettable. The view from the top is simply breathtaking and amazing. But it is not only the very beautiful landscape that makes the mountain so attractive; it’s also Mt. Paektu’s cultural and mythological significance. Mt. Paektu has been worshipped by Koreans and Manchu people throughout history as their cultural birth place and their ancestral origin. For Koreans, Mt. Peakdu is a sacred mountain. According to North Korean sources, Leader Kim Jong Il was also born on this mountain.

During our Great Mt. Paektu Tour you will be able to see Mt. Paektu for yourself. Our group will directly fly to Mt. Paektu from Pyongyang in a chartered Air Koryo airplane. Furthermore, on 15 th August you can enjoy the rare opportunity to witness these celebrations. A mass dance event is likely to take place near Pyongyang Indoor Stadium and you may join in and dance together with the Koreans, if you want. The tour also includes sightseeing in the capital Pyongyang, where you will visit many of the famous monuments. Also on the program is a trip to Mt. Kumgang. The tourist region Kumgangsan is one of the most scenic areas of the Korean Peninsula. For over a million years, the region’s granite and diorite rocks have been weathered, forming precipitous 12000 peaks, multifarious crags, stone gates, tunnels, cliffs, cascades, valleys and pools. The area also has a rich flora and fauna. About 130 species of birds, 9 species of reptiles, 10 species of amphibians and 30 species of fishes live here. More than 2350 species of plants grow around the mountain. For centuries, the Kumgang region has been internationally known for its beauty. However, it had initially been declared a military zone since the division of Korea and was thus not accessible to the public. Only towards the end of the 1990s, a part of the area was re-opened to Western tourists. The first region was only accessible by ferry from south Korea. But since 2003, it is also possible to arrive by coach to the area.

But that’s far from everything that you will see on our tour: you will also visit Mt. Myohyang. Reaching 1909m altitude, Mt. Myohyang is the second highest mountain in North Korea after Mt. Paektu. According to its name, Mt. Myohyang is “the mountain of mysterious scents”. Mt. Myohyang has been regarded as sacred by Koreans for a long time and it is deeply associated with the Tangun myth. The mountain area houses Pohyon Temple, the largest Buddhist shrine in North Korea, as well as the International Friendship Exhibition, a massive underground exhibition of presents from international statesmen and businessmen for the North Korean leaders. But that’s not all: you will also visit the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) on the border to south Korea near Kaesong and Mt. Myohyang. Reaching 1909m altitude, Mt. Myohyang is the second highest mountain in North Korea after Mt. Paekdu. According to its name, Mt. Myohyang is “the mountain of mysterious scents”.
